SOAR: Shirtless On A Rooftop
A downloadable Slash Of Life Game
SOAR is my attempt at a TTRPG System that emulates the feel of various Beat'Em Up games, but not just the part where you smash someone's head in with a bike (that still happens in SOAR to be clear).
SOAR is also about trying to mechanize familiarity with a city, the sense of getting to know it as you spend more and more time in it.
In SOAR, Players take on the role of people who can throw their weight in a fight and maybe impress a few folks along the way.
SOAR Features
- Flawed but interesting player characters: You are not perfect, and no one expects you to be, you will be rewarded for playing into your flaws.
- Flavorful playbooks: Want to play someone who was well known in the underworld but is trying to change their ways ? Do you want to play someone is hunted by a crime syndicate ? Wanna play some Private Eye that struggles between the truth and what's right ? You can do all of those, and more, in SOAR's SLASH of LIFE system, with unique playbook features that also come with their own Turmoil, a set of stats representing two opposing ideals you will struggle with !
- Fast, position and movement grid based tactical combat: kick someone down some stairs, throw someone out a window, jump up a desk to shoot someone, these are all things you can do in SOAR's BRAWL system.
- Living and breathing city: Named NPC will stick around, how you treat them matters, give gifts to that store owner you like for some discounts down the line, develop a rivalry with a member of a gang, explore different restaurants to find out what their food does, go singing karaoke with your friends ! SOAR focuses on making the city you're in feel deep but ultimately knowable.
- A Guide to embody The City: With tips and tricks to run SOAR as well some advice on how to easily start prepping for your first session of SOAR.
For now, this project is free, however as time passes I will try and fund more art for it as well as proper layout, but that's in the far future.
For Feedback, you can find me on “X”/twitter at @dunyakat, on the SOAR discord or you can just send a comment on this page, i'll try and read it !

Tons of snappy, fun combat.
A friend linked to this and we’re all talking about giving it a try - thanks for putting this out there!
Small bit of feedback: hollow point bullets are are actually less able to punch through armor than other kinds of bullets, not more. Just poking around on the Internet, there’s a kind of US military armor-piercing ammo that’s referred to as “Black tip”, which might be a cool name? I don’t know, just wanted to point out that hollow point bullets are not armor piercing.
Unrelated to bullets: the Turmoil mechanic is really interesting! That sounds like a really fun dynamic to try to lean into.
Hey ! If you do give it a try absolutely tell me how it went !
As for the bullets, I mostly took the name hollowpoint because it sounded cool and I remembered hearing it about bullet and armor, I just had it backward, whoops !
No worries! Glad to be of service!
This should now have a more accurate name !
