SOAR Dev Log #5: GM advice and Mapmaking

Little known fact about me, my main involvement in the TTRPG hobby comes from GMing lots of games and designing maps for official Lancer modules.

Okay, its actually a fairly known fact, I lied.

I'm bringing this up because as v0.4 is getting closer, I decided to add something that I think was lacking, the GM section, which by extension should cover the map making too.

Folks, making a GM guide is hard, I knew this, but now I know it from needing to make one for my own game.

It isn't because of the complexity of it, as much as the fact that there is constantly a problem looming over me, how do I give advice that leads to running a good game of this system but not just "run sessions like me" ?

Obviously, I believe that my game design is very opinionated in favor of what I like, so in a way this game is already encouraging you to run games like games I enjoy, but the problem lies in the fine details and especially in playtesting:
How do I give advice that doesn't just erase potential problems folks might have and might bring up later down the line ?

How do I give map advice that doesn't just lead to people just making maps exactly like mine ?

It is a problem to me, because, like I said, I'm opinionated, and one of those opinions I have is that while I am responsible for the system I provide, I'm closer to someone providing a role to play in a theater play, rather than telling someone how to play exactly.
In other words, I still want to encourage players and GMs picking this up and making it theirs through their own ways of using it, that goes for maps and it goes for structures of play.

The idea that the perfect game is only played in one specific way is not one i want to chase with this game, to me, TTRPGs are at their hearts a creative medium and that goes for all ends of the table and even someone behind the text you're reading !

So the way I figured out how to "fix" this was to give broad guidelines in the next version, things I've found help games generally flow better, and making sure it is listed as my own experience.
For maps, its trickier, I think I will end up giving a bunch of premade maps in the next batch of play and give a broad piece of advice on maps ("don't make them too empty and think of the fiction of the map"), we will see if it works.

On the topic of more news for the next version, I'm tinkering somewhat with making more bosses and I have ideas for two new playbooks: A master who treats other characters as students and the Troublemaker, an artist who spreads their core belief through their art.

See you soon !
